Hunger Summit - October 2008
Thanks to everyone who attended our October 12, 2008 summit. We got a great start on our goal to end childhood hunger in Washington. After October's Summit, we followed up with people who attended, people who couldn't be there and many, many others to solicit input and feedback - thanks for your recommendations and referrals!
Through the fall, we continued collecting information and ideas for our statewide strategic plan, and we began to make plans for the legislative session that began in January 2008.
2008 Legislative Session
In the Legislature, anti-hunger advocates claimed a few significant victories in food stamp policy and improving access to local food for schools, food banks and low-income families; unfortunately, our efforts to completely eliminate the school lunch co-pay for low-income students didn't win this year. For more information on the session, see the 2008 policy papers ("quick start" tab, on right).
End Childhood Hunger Washington - Strategic Plan
After extensive research, interviews, surveys and reviews by Summit participants and others, we have completed a strategic plan to end childhood hunger in Washington --- please follow the 'quick start' link to the full report. This Plan has 10 goals and recommends policy change, collaborative programming, strategic investments and targeted awareness campaign objectives in each goal --- taken all together, we can end childhood hunger.
Many thanks to all of you who have contributed to this process so far. Our next steps will be to prepare a two year Action Plan (including policy priorities for the 2009-11 biennium), and we encourage you to get involved! We will hold meetings throughout the summer to identify local priorities and critical next steps in each of the 10 goals --- come to these meetings, invite colleagues, send your ideas, share information, and spread the word!
Feed Your Brain - Summer Literacy & Summer Meal Programs in Washington's Rural Communities
Feed Your Brain is a partnership between School's Out Washington, Children's Alliance and Discuren Charitable Foundation that provides small grants and support for programs that provide summer literacy (reading and writing) activities and sponsor an open site for the Summer Food Service Program in high-need rural communities (town popluation of 25,000 or less) where resources are limited. Funds may be used to pay for costs associated with summer learning and meals, including salaries, training, transportation, curriculum, supplies, equipment, furniture and contracted services. For "Feed Your Brain" materials, see the "quick start" tab on the right.
We will be updating this website with additional material soon and developing ways for you to share your ideas and comments.
Thanks for your interest and commitment.
